“emerging from the dark” — a celebration of journeying, discovery, and ceremony.
This piece, “emerging from the dark”, a celebration of journeying, discovery, and ceremony; embodies strength, rebellion, and endurance. A purple-infused robe draped over a bejeweled gown; moving symbolically from shadow into light.
It speaks to the historical oppression of the feminine by those who had power over them, and, more urgently, resonates with the contemporary experience of women who find themselves hiding in the dark, grappling with fear and loss of control over their lives, emotionally and physically. It is an invitation: for each of us to hold our place with quiet resolve, waiting for our moment to emerge.
The robe is crafted from linen, silk, and handwoven cotton, threaded with purple, emerald, and silver. Stitched into its seams are motifs drawn from my heritage, thistles and heather, symbols of strength and protection. To honour the three stages of womanhood, maiden, mother, and crone, (yet to be added) adorned with these moon phases and the Celtic triskelion, signifying transformation, cyclical growth, and reverence for the natural world. Beneath, a gown of a deep, bejeweled red, the colour of life and death, of self-love and defiance, celebrating the emergence of womanhood in all its complexity and power.
This piece marks a beginning for me: a story still unfolding, to be stitched into over time, and perhaps never truly finished…
